320 days ago Marcel Roy made the following comment on the observation of Yellow Warbler posted on July 03, 2012:
Yellow Warblers are small, evenly proportioned songbirds with medium-length tails and rounded heads. For a warbler, the straight, thin bill is relatively large. Yellow Warblers are uniformly yellow birds. Males are a bright, egg-yolk yellow with reddish streaks on the underparts. Both sexes flash yellow patches in the tail. The face is unmarked, accentuating the large black eye. Measurements (Both Sexes) Length 12–13 cm (4.7–5.1 in) Wingspan 16–20 cm (6.3–7.9 in) Weight 9–11 g (0.3–0.4 oz). (reply...)

Hi Roman: I have photos (I couldn't upload)of Caribou in December with velvet, it was shedding then, and you can see it clearly, when I seen this I thought it was late, now reading you blog, I know it is late. Would a mild winter do this? Last year we did have a very mild winter for Labrador. (reply...)

1107 days ago NL Nature Support made the following comment on the observation of Eastern Coyote posted on May 08, 2010:
The hind print is smaller than the front print. The larger front foot has a much larger pad than the rear foot. When travelling, coyote tracks are more linear than dogs or foxes which tend to wander more. (reply...)
1107 days ago NL Nature Support made the following comment on the observation of Eastern Coyote posted on May 08, 2010:
Thus it is more likely to see coyote sign (track, scat, kill/scavenge sites) than the actual animal. The scat can come in many forms depending on scat age and contents. It can be easily mistaken for domestic dog, or fox scat. Coyote tracks are similar to a domestic dog, but can be distinguished by their pointy shape, while dog tracks are more circular. Coyote tracks usually show claw prints. (reply...)
1107 days ago NL Nature Support made the following comment on the observation of Eastern Coyote posted on May 08, 2010:
Coyotes are about the size of a collie. An adult male weights approximately 25 pounds and measures 120 cm in length. Coyotes are usually a buff grizzled grey coloured with white throat and belly and black-tipped guard hairs. The coyote sheds in June-July and thus appears much more slender in the summer than in winter. Coyotes are nocturnal and can be quite shy. (reply...)
1107 days ago NL Nature Support made the following comment on the observation of Old Man's Beard (Usnea) posted on May 08, 2010:
Usnea lichens can be easily identified by pulling back the outer sheath on the main stem. Usnea lichens have an elastic pure white chord running through the center of the main stem. Lichen species which resemble Usnea do not have this white cord, and appear grey-green throughout. Usnea lichens do not change color throughout the growing season as do lichen species which closely resemble Usnea. (reply...)
