Currently, we have the following species:
If you have a observed a different specie, you can still post an observation by click on and picking "other" from the list. if you feel the specie should be added to our active list, please post below

How about other marine species such as fish or crusaceans. I think it would be intersting in mapping species found along the shoreline. We have about 14500 km of coastline between the island and Labrador mainland so there's quite a large area to collect sightings.

I was going to post a sighting other than in your list but cannot pick "other" form any of the drop down lists.

I think that there should be an "other" category within the more specific drop downs. For example, if I want to record a gull species that isnt on the list, I have to use the "other unknown species" from the main category. Why no have an "other" in the Birds:Gulls and Terns category?

Michelle, First, thank you for your feedback and observations. I loved the recent one with gulls. What you can do is post an observation under "other" and type in the comments the species that you think it is. Then we will add that species and reclassify your observation. Thanks, Roman

Hi Roman,

I think this site is poorly designed.  I thought I would post observations of butterflies in my garden (we usually have about a dozen species during the year), but all there is under insects is Eastern Comma, a rather rare species in these parts, the Green Comma is much more common.

The mechanism for adding a species is too cumbersome, users ought to be able to add their own, subject to post editing.

And by the way the normal singular of species is species, the word specie is used for money in the form of hard cash.

Howard,

Again, thank you for your suggestions. The mechanism for adding new species will be changes quite radically at some point hopefully soon. For now, you can still post observations for which there is no species listed under "Other" - "Unknown other" and we will then update the list and update the sighting.

I have just added Green Comma and Other Butterfly for you to use.

Please let me know if you have any difficulties.

Thank you,

Roman

I have just tried a posting under other butterfly, I clicked on the green box (as I did last time) and as far as I can see nothing happened, the data I added is lost in netland.  I'll try another posting once this one appears.

In the meantime you might add:

Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio canadensis)
Short-tailed Swallowtail (Papilio brevicauda)
Painted lady (Vanessa cardui)
Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)
Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa)
Milbert's Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis milberti)
White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis)
Cabbage White (Pieris rapae)
Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon)
Northern Blue (Lycaeides idas)
Leaf Cutter Bee (Megachile sp.)

All of which I have seen or expect to see in my garden during the summer + some others less frequently.

By the way, why is it necessary to select a font before you can post?  Why not have a default?

I have now discovered how to edit, you have to select "edit" TWICE!

Howard, It seems there is some kind of issue around recording observation. It is hard to troubleshoot without the information itself. Is it possible that you left some fields empty? When you click on the button, does it go anywhere after? If it does not, could you review the data to see if there are any issues and then resubmit? Meanwhile, I have added the butterflies, thank you for your suggestions!
