Serpentine and Blow-Me-Down Mountains

I know this is a west coast bias, but.....

The Blow-Me-Down Mountains, the Serpentine River valley and the Lewis Hills are some of the best, most rugged reaches of the province that is still relatively accessible by foot.

The Serpentine River in particular is quite good for those who enjoy canoeing.

All 3 of these areas hold the same geological features that has made the Tablelands and Trout River famous worldwide (actually, they are from exactly the same rock formations - it's just the most southern extremity of the periditite, serpentine, lava dykes and pillow lavas of Gros Morne, but without all the people).

The new trails formed by the IATNL and OBIEC are good enough to walk on in sandals or sneakers, but not over-built, so you don't see the tell-tale signs of trail-development 'overkill'.

You will still have to 'hoof it' the good, old-fashioned way ☺.

The wildlife there is fantastic.  Moose, caribou, coyotes, newfoundland pine martens, merlins, hawks, owls and various birds of prey, as well as grouse, ptarmigan and countless songbirds call this place home during part of the year.

Heck, when you are finished with these spots, take a leisurely ride down to the Codroy Valley and do some world-class bird watching!

How do I know this?

Well, I just live below Blow Me Down Mountain in the community of York Harbour.  I see this and more every day just by simpling existing here.

Cheers,
Randy Skinner
