This is an interesting foliose lichen. What species of deciduous tree is it on? I'm guessing that it may be Lobaria quercizans, but would prefer to see a voucher sample before committing to this ID. Mac

Thanks for all of the comments Mac. I'd have to recheck, but I believe the tree in this photo was either 'Abies balsamea' or 'Picea glauca.' I should be able to find the tree again and post that information for the record.

Hi Marnhull, If this is not on a deciduous tree, then it is not my first guess - Lobaria quercizans. It may be something a little more exotic, and not widespread in NL. I won't guess without knowing more. I have collected lichens in SW NF and have not seen similar. I would be interested in following up on this. Many thanks for your interest in lichens - it's not an everyday topic in NL. Sincerely, mac

Okay Mac. I should have the tree species posted within 24 hours, along with a photo of the same lichen scene 3+ months later. I'm 99.9% certain that the tree is 'Abies balsamea,' but my memory does play tricks with me.

Mac, the tree is definitely 'Abies balsamea.' I don't have an eye for lichens, but it seems to me that the same lichen is also growing on a nearby White/Paper birch - 'Betula papyrifera.' I'll post images in a new entry.
