The depth of the lichen appeared to be only about 1 mm. It is growing on the bark of a maple tree that was planted 12 years ago.

I'm only starting to learn my lichens, but I think that's one from either the Xanthoria or Xanthomendoza genus... ("sunburst" lichens"). I've been shown one in the field and it was also on a maple.

Try Candelaria concolor, or Candleflame Lichen.
