This is where my hse is just above this river. My GSD mix chased, which I figured to be a coyote based on its height at around 3:30am or 4am in the morning.
My dog is 55 lbs and has handled Rottweilers based solely on her K9's. One on One I am not worried but I was worried about a potential pack which caused me concern on this evening.I feed her cow and pig bones to keep her teeth at top notch.
This night, I noticed the coyote as it crept up my tree line until it came with in 15m of me. Once my dog noticed it she engaged the coyote with chase and barks and immediately the coyote retreated with my dog in pursuit. I have no neighhbors to the south so I ran through the woods afraid for my dog but she came out from the marsh onto the street roughly 200m from where she saw the coyote. She ran just as fast as the coyote, imo...roughly 35-40km/hr.
I live at 262 Old Broad Cove Road in case you wish more info. I would have given this info last year but was unaware of an avenue to publish the encounter. I have told friends and neighbors with smaller dogs to advise them of this encounter to help them mitigate against a potential attack on their smaller animals. Hope this helps.

Thanks for letting us know about this sighting. There are actually not that many documented recordings of coyotes attacking domestic dogs. Most records of coyotes attacking dogs are on small dogs and cats, and in areas with high human population (e.g., southern California) where these is less natural habitat for coyotes. Many coyote attacks can be linked to humans feeding them (on purpose, or accidentally by leaving pet food, scraps around the yard). Mitigation by not leaving small pets or scrap food out is a good strategy, so glad you told neighbours. Please share future sightings!
