Just to the lower right of the twenty-five cent piece can be seen the tips of the lichens. The colour in reality is near burnt sienna. These lichens are growing on the base of a large (1+ metre diameter) dead Yellow birch ('Betula alleghaniensis') that's being hollowed out by red ants.

The resolution is not detailed enough to be certain. This could be a Stereocaulon, but I'm more inclined to think it's a gray Cladonia. If it is coarsely sorediate over the podetium (stem) and has brownish fruiting bodies (apothecia), then there's a remote chance that this may a first record of Cladonia ramulosa for NF. mac
