'Juniperus communis' (Common Juniper) growing under 'Pinus resinosa' (Red pine). The long rusty coloured needles are from Red pine. The browsing on the Common Juniper seen in the upper left hand corner was almost certainly caused by a Snowshoe hare (rabbit). Moose also browse in that area, but moose browsing generally leaves tear marks, not cut marks, on the branches.
Incidentally, juniper is a common name for larch and tamarack ('Larix laricina') in Newfoundland, but this isn't that tree.
