Butterfly, that might have blown in from Nova Scotia with the storm last night. 'Polygonia sp' probably the Eastern Comma 'Polygonia comma' (Harris, 1842).

Thank you for yet another beautiful observation - as you can see, I am updating the classification as you add new species.
There is a new feature on the website that you may or may not use - you can now add identification to species you are familiar with. The link is always at the top for each species and observation!

also, interestingly, the map of habitat for this butterfly does not include NLFD:

Wonder if the map is inaccurate or it is truly vagrant?

Thank you Roman. That will be a good new feature. I'm not 100% sure the butterfly is 'Polygonia comma.' I spent about an hour searching the web and that's my best guess. The butterfly was very active and wouldn't let me get close. And then a snowshoe hare ran behind me, so I had to keep an eye out for its return. I think the map is inaccurate and needs updating.
