Swollen buds containing male strobili on the underside of a Balsam fir ('Abies balsamea'). These (still) swelling buds will burst in a few weeks time and release yellow pollen that will fertilize female cones near the top of Balsam fir trees. Cones that are successfully fertilized will form seed that will drop to the ground during late autumn/winter. Viable seed will germinate and form Balsam fir seedlings in 2011.
