Noisy robin today. I've seen a few around all winter.

It's a Sanyo VPC-x1200. 12.1 megapixels. It cost $112.99 total at Shoppers Drug Mart in Port aux Basques in January. The 8 gigabyte memory card cost about $40.00 at Wal-Mart in Corner Brook. It's almost impossible to take a blurry picture because of the image stabilization. You can snap a picture while quickly spinning around and there's no blur. The robin picture was taken at 5x digital zoom. It takes great movies too (.mov format).

Roman, that robin is probably a Newfoundland robin (Turdus migratorius nigrideus), not an American robin(Turdus migratorius migratorius). There's a difference. For example:

Is there really such a thing as the Newfoundland robin? It's not listed in Ian Warkentin's new bird book. I hear debate on this, and not being a very good taxonomist, I just don't know. Anyone else have any insights?

Peters and Burleigh (Birds of Newfoundland, 1951) list it on page 317 as a Newfoundland robin. 'Turdus migratorius nigrideus' Aldrich and Nutt. It's a subspecies of the American robin. The NS Museum link lists it as a race, but they don't name it. Over the years (last 40 years of example), it's been talked about on the CBC, etc as the Newfoundland robin, since it's not strictly an American robin. Sometimes you'll see American robin (Newfoundland) to distinguish it. Sherpaguides calls it the Newfoundland robin:http://www.sherpaguides.com/georgia/atlanta_urban_wildlife/wildnotes/

You are welcome. My friends and I know it's a Newfoundland robin, but convincing others is the trouble. Information tends to get lost as time goes on, especially when it's not listed in new books and on websites. BTW, there are other subspecies in Newfoundland, including the Newfoundland Hairy Woodpecker. It's listed in Peters and Burleigh, and the Encyclopedia of NL. 2 more links. You'll find many named subspecies in the first link:
