Red squirrels are not native to Newfoundland. They were introduced in 1963. See 'The Canadian Field Naturalist,' Volume 90, pp. 60-64

I've heard of them as far east as St. John's. You should be able to see them most places, but they prefer the forest from my experience. But I've see them just outside Port aux Basques where the trees are quite stunted and small. They came across from Labrador to the Great Northern Peninsula on boats with wood in 1963. They can be quite noisy, so you won't miss them when they're communicating with each other, or when they let you know they're nearby :-)
